Course Overview

Modules and courses at this level are designed for learners with experience in the workplace who are required to work independently.

Learning at this level requires the learner to apply knowledge and skills in a range of settings and complex situations, analysing the information

to help them to make judgments and decisions from a range of possibilities to direct their own work and/or that of others.

Leadership and Decision-Making

  • Aim.

    The aim of this module is to introduce learners to fundamental leadership and management concepts that they can interpret and apply within their own work contexts.

    Learning Outcomes

    Upon completion of the module, learners will be able to:

    1. Distinguish between leadership and management and articulate how they interact within the work setting

    2. Consider and choose different strategies of leading teams

    3. Choose appropriate strategies to solve problems within the workplace

    4. Use decision-making models to justify actions

    5. Reflect on own skills as a leader within their current role and construct action plans for personal development.

  • Formative assessment points are built into the delivery.

    Summative assessment:

    1. Written audit of an incident, analysing leadership, and decision-making processes and skills.

    2. Action plan for personal and professional development, which can feed into the learner’s PDR process

  • Claire Humble

    Claire Humble is our award-winning former head of safety, security and facilities at Teesside University. A former senior police officer she is now the lead author in much of our sector-leading elearning content.

  • Dr Anne Llewellyn

    Dr Anne Llewellyn

    Wellbeing specialist: Dr Anne Llewellyn’s (EdD) doctorate analysed the use of online immersive learning spaces to enhance professional skills development. As Deputy Director, Student and Library Services she had responsibility for learning skills development, student disability and mental health services at Teesside University until 2020. Anne has co-authored a number of textbooks in health and social care and social work.

  • Nicky Arrowsmith

    Law, legislation and safeguarding specialist: Former Detective Superintendent and Head of CID, Nicky Arrowsmith is an experienced major and complex crime investigator, spending much of her nearly 30 years in the Met Police specialising in safeguarding including with Sapphire (Serious Sexual Assault) specialist unit. She is a PIP 3 registered Senior Investigating Officer and an experienced coach and mentor.
